This day raises awareness about the threats facing endangered species and the importance of conservation efforts to protect them. As scuba divers in Mexico, have a deep appreciation for the diverse range of aquatic species that call the waters surrounding us their home.
Unfortunately, many species are endangered or threatened due to factors such as climate change, pollution, overfishing, and habitat destruction. In Mexico, several aquatic species are endangered, including the vaquita, a small porpoise found only in the Gulf of California, and several species of sea turtles, including the hawksbill and green sea turtles, local residents of the town of Akumal and our favorite neighbors. The leatherback turtle is another endangered species.
Conservation efforts are critical to protecting these endangered species and preserving the ecosystems they depend on. We always make sure to follow responsible diving practices, such as avoiding contact with marine life and not disturbing the natural environment.
