Specialty PADI Courses:
The Riviera Maya is a scuba divers paradise. The 4 bays that make up the Akumal area are bordered by what is commonly considered the 2nd largest barrier reef in the western Hemisphere, offering a great variety of underwater scenery for scuba divers. Blue Experience have selected 18 local sites that range from just 10m (35ft) down to 30m(100ft). On the shallower sites 10m-15m(30ft-50ft)we come across many turtles, small rays, lobster, lion fish, trumpet fish, morays and some large barracudas. Large coral formations run parallel to the main reef and offer protection to many species of smaller fish and allow for anchorage of many sea fans and sponges. Hard corals grow well in this shallow clear water. Deeper sites 20m-30m(65ft-100ft) offer the chance to explore many canyons and hunt for sleeping Nurse Sharks, larger Green morays and other larger species. Turtles are abundant on all sites along with all the multi coloured Caribbean reef fish. The current is very small here making all our sites very gentle and easy to dive for all levels of divers. All the sites are accessed by a short boat journey, max 20 minutes, generally 10 -15 minutes only, some even less. We limit the groups to a maximum of 8 divers on a boat (generally max 6) to ensure plenty of space and a more personalised service.

Not only is Akumal blessed with some wonderful Ocean diving but we also have the Magical Mexican Cenotes right here on our doorstep. Cenotes are huge underground river and cavern systems that are accessible to all certified divers. The Yucatan Peninsula is famous for these systems that allow us to dive amongst amazing formations of Stalactites, Stalagmites and limestone columns. There are several theories about how the systems were formed, but the most popular is that long ago the whole of the peninsula was underwater and as sea levels dropped the peninsula appeared. Hence the land here is made up of billions of minute marine creatures. Mainly formed of soft porous calcium rocks the fresh water has, over thousands of years, carved its way through leaving behind these wonderful systems. The Mayan people consider these Cenotes to be sacred places, (no problems with diving in them though!), and There is a special “peace and serenity” around them which you will feel as you begin your dive in the crystal clear fresh water. Akumal has many Cenotes all within easy reach by a short car ride, from 10 minutes to 30 minutes. All certified divers have the chance to do these incredible Dives as many are both shallow and all allow access to the surface within 20m(60ft). Natural light is never far away, and in several places it comes through openings in the roof to give a spectacular light show as it hit’s the clear waters. There are no narrow passages to squeeze through, its all big and open. The routes through are Clearly defined by permanent guide lines and you will Always be within a couple of metres(6ft) of these. Diving in Cenotes is strictly controlled and you will Be in a group of 4 divers maximum with one fully Qualified Cave/Cavern instructor. Don’t miss out on this truly amazing diving experience.
